This Is How I Got A Scholarship To Study In The UK Despite Coming From A Poor Family.

Eight months ago, I came across an advertisement of a fully paid scholarship in the UK for a Masters Degree in science courses and being that I had studied Computer Science, I knew I was qualified.

The deadline for the application was in three days’ time and I decided to take my time to apply the opportunity which I knew would change my life and expose me to better opportunities. Five days after application, I received a message in my email telling me that I had passed the first part of the selection process and the second one involved a written test in the UK embassy’s office in Lusaka.

I attended the test and I found out that we were around 50 applicants and the scholarship was only for the top two people. The test was a bit tough and moreover, the other applicants were qualified people who had greater qualifications than I had. Others were boasting that they had connections to get the scholarship and then there was me, I was just there with no connections.

During the test, my confidence went down since my fellow applicants seemed more better placed to pass than I was. Three days after leaving for the test, I got a call from the Embassy telling me that I had passed the test and that the last test involved a one on one interview with a panel.

During the call, I was informed that the interview would be the determining factor whether one would emerge in the top two applicants and ultimately get the scholarship to study in the UK. I thoroughly prepared for the interview and even took a leave from work to prepare for the interview.

On that day, I found out that we were only 10 applicants remaining which meant that 8 people would be slashed from the race and the top two would fly to the UK to study for their Masters. The worst thing was that, five of the guys in that list were from rich families in allover Kenya and they kept boasting that they would get the scholarship since their parents would make a quick call to the Embassy.

They were really demeaning and though I had worked hard to reach where I was, I was still feeling as if they would take the opportunity which way too much to me that the rest of the applicants. My worry further deepened after the interview went south. I could not answer all the questions since I happened to be nervous.

I went home feeling frustrated since I knew I had lost the one chance that I needed to get the scholarship. I cried so much. In that frustration, I called my mother and told her that my hopes to get the scholarship were now under the bus since all the rich kids would get the opportunity.
