Residents of Kansenshi in Ndola were left in disbelief on Sunday, August 3, 2025, after a man who had stolen copper cathodes during the night mysteriously returned them in the early morning while openly weeping.
According to witnesses, the man, who had been seen lurking around homesteads earlier that week, arrived at the copper cathodes owner’s compound shortly after sunrise, driving a passo and begging for forgiveness.
His voice trembled as he repeatedly claimed that an invisible force had been tormenting him since the theft, making it impossible to eat, sleep or even rest his mind.
Neighbours gathered quickly, curious to understand what could have driven him to return the copper cathodes so suddenly, especially considering that copper theft cases in the region often end with the culprits vanishing for good.
Several elderly residents noted that it was the first time they had seen such a dramatic confession without the presence of police officers or a village meeting.
The copper cathodes owner, still in shock, said he had woken up to noises outside his gate and found the suspect standing there with swollen eyes and shaky hands.
He claimed the man explained that strange dreams and unexplained whispers had haunted him throughout the night, each one telling him to take the copper cathodes back before sunrise.
It later emerged that the victim had secretly contacted Dr. Mawanda, a renowned traditional specialist, to intervene through a spiritual justice ritual. Within hours of the ceremony, the suspect’s behaviour reportedly shifted from defiant to fearful, culminating in his public confession.

Some even took photos and videos of the crying man, which quickly circulated on WhatsApp groups and Facebook pages, sparking debates about whether traditional methods could be more effective than formal law enforcement in curbing rural theft.

In the end, the copper were untouched, the owner’s faith in justice was restored, and the man’s tearful return became a story that locals say will be told for years to come — a powerful reminder that, sometimes, the fear of unseen justice can be stronger than any police handcuffs.
